On 31 October 2026, West Norwood Cemetery and Crematorium in London will host a guided tour exploring the history and architecture of this Victorian cemetery. Participants will learn about notable figures buried there and the cultural attitudes towards death in the nineteenth century. The visit will conclude with a discussion at a local pub.
Come along with us for an atmospheric autumn visit to West Norwood Cemetery, one of London's famous 'Magnificent Seven' Victorian cemeteries
Opened in 1837, West Norwood Cemetery is a remarkable landscape of Victorian funerary architecture, elaborate monuments and fascinating stories of London's past. Its Gothic tombs, imposing mausoleums and historic graves offer a window into changing attitudes towards death, remembrance and burial in the nineteenth century.
We'll explore the cemetery's rich history, discover some of the people buried here and consider what its monuments and memorials can tell us about Victorian society and the archaeology of death.
The visit starts at 11am and there will be plenty of time for questions. As ever, we'll adjourn afterwards to a local pub to mull over all we've seen.
**Student special offer**
Students in full time education can book for the special rate of £7.50 - and the first booking includes a year's membership of CBA London and priority booking for all our events.
Attendees will be sent further information on booking. Please note that the visit involves walking outdoors on cemetery paths, some of which may be uneven. Suitable footwear is recommended.
West Norwood Cemetery is just a short walk (5-7 minutes) from West Norwood railway station, making it easy to reach by public transport. Southern trains run from London Victoria approximately every 15 minutes and from London Bridge approximately every 30 minutes on Saturdays.
