About Fences
Fences at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s landmark play, set in 1950s Pittsburgh. It follows Troy Maxson, who survived a close call with death but cannot escape the past, as tensions at home rise around his wife, Rose, and their son Cory.
Directed by Daniel Bailey, this new production brings Wilson’s story of ambition, family pressure and changing expectations back to the stage. Wilson is one of America’s most influential 20th-century writers, and the play’s focus on a family at a turning point gives the story its force.
