About Fences

Fences is at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in London. August Wilson’s landmark play, set in the 1950s, follows Troy Maxson as the pressures of family life and the past begin to close in around him. At home, Rose is trying to keep the family together while their son Cory hopes for a more open future.

The play is driven by the collision between ambition, responsibility and the limits placed on the next generation. Written by one of America’s most influential 20th century writers, Fences returns in a new production directed by Daniel Bailey, who is credited here as an award-winning director.

With its focus on family, change and the choices that shape a life, this production presents Wilson’s story in a direct and contemporary way while remaining rooted in its 1950s setting.
