About King John

King John at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is Shakespeare’s rarely performed play about a king trying to rule in the shadow of his brother, Richard the Lionheart. Set in an intimate, candlelit theatre, it follows John as he claims the crown and attempts to hold power in England.

As John tries to establish his own identity, the play moves through chaos, turbulence and power struggles across nations. It explores how far he is willing to go to keep control of the crown.

Olivier-nominated director Jaz Woodcock-Stewart makes her Globe directorial debut with this production.
