The event 'Meet Saki. The Funniest British Writer No-One Reads Anymore' will be held on 10 November 2026 at the October Gallery in London. This spoken word show, featuring Jan Goodman, aims to revive interest in the works of Saki, a writer who significantly influenced Noel Coward, by exploring his life and literary contributions.
A new show about the long lost genius who inspired Noel Coward. Think the Downton Abbey era deliciously satirised. Featuring Jan Goodman.
As Noel Coward tells it, he was 15 years old, staying for a weekend in 'hunting country' at the large house of Mrs Astley Cooper, when he picked up a copy of Saki's 'Beasts and Super-Beasts', took it to his bedroom, started to read, and was unable to sleep until he'd finished the whole book. He has also stated that Saki is one of the two most significant influences on his career as a writer.
Today, hardly anyone has heard of Saki. Or reads him. Which is an outrageous, literary, failing, that this new Spoken Word show from WORDS SPOKEN HERE, and Jan Goodman, seeks to correct.
So what you'll get is an idea of the man, of the world he lived in, and of consumate skill with which he dipped his pen in ink, and gently eviscerated both society and politics. And you'll get a whole omnibus full of delightful characters being gently mangled.
The October Gallery is an atmospheric venue, located in an old Victorian girls school building, five minutes walk from Holborn. A couple of lovely pubs round the corner, and many good places to eat nearby.
The room we'll be in is upstairs, is called The Club Room, and feels a bit like a library in a grand house. So it's the perfect setting to discover more about an Edwardian writer like Saki. The room holds about 25 people, so it will be an intimate affair.
Obviously, when WORDS SPOKEN HERE really takes off we'll be selling out the O2. So imagine the kudos you'll have being able to drop into conversation 'Oh yes, they are fabulous, but I saw them right at the start, in a tiny venue near Holborn.'
See you on the 11th....
