In an impressive debut feature from writer-director Channing Godfrey Peoples, ' Miss Juneteenth ' is a warm and empathetic story of a mother’s attempts to pass her own interrupted ambitions on to her teenage daughter, with the backdrop of beautifully-observed community life. 'Miss Juneteenth' is a decades-old pageant competition held in US black communities that celebrates Black History, culture and educational achievement. In this Fort Worth, Texas pageant Turquoise (Nicole Behari) mother to 14 year old Kai (Alexis Chikaeze) sees a chance for her daughter to achieve the scholarship that she had previously dreamt of and puts all her energies into reaching that goal. Mark Kermode described Miss Juneteenth as "a beautifully observed and quietly powerful drama that applies its coming-of-age tropes to children, parents and politics alike." The overall themes are love, hope and change, with a sense of the everyday that makes this film so memorable.
