‘Psychoanalysis begins where education breaks down,’ Adam Phillips writes.

For the launch of CCPL - Centre for Community Psychotherapy London (https://ccplondon.org.uk/), Phillips will join psychoanalyst Francesca Joseph for an evening of conversation about beginnings.

Whether one’s first encounter with psychoanalysis, the start of a psychoanalytic training, or setting out on a collective project like setting up a community therapy service, psychoanalytic beginnings are a way of asking what else may be possible when we start paying a different kind of attention.

Phillips will be in conversation with Joseph to reflect on the romance and risks of beginnings. What is one’s initial meeting with psychoanalysis a meeting with, and what do we risk losing once we think we know the answer? What, if anything, does psychoanalysis teach us about morality, and can psychoanalysis itself be taught?

Join Phillips and Joseph as they explore these and other questions for an evening of thinking about psychoanalysis in its personal and political dimensions.

Adam Phillips, formerly Principal Child Psychotherapist at Charing Cross Hospital, London, is a practising psychoanalyst and a visiting professor in the English department at the University of York. He is the author of numerous works of psychoanalysis and literary criticism, including most recently On Giving Up, On Wanting to Change, Attention Seeking, In Writing, Unforbidden Pleasures and Missing Out. He is General Editor of the Penguin Modern Classics Freud translations, and a Fellow of The Royal Society of Literature.

Francesca Joseph is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist in private practice and a member of The Site for Contemporary Psychoanalysis.
