Open House occurs on 19 September 2026 at Temple Tube Station outside, offering public access to private buildings including the Royal Courts and Church of Scotland. Details on admission can be found on the event website.
Once a year in September, 800 private buildings in London open their doors for the weekend and let the public in to look around and admire their architecture. We are going to take full advantage of this visiting buildings on the Saturday and the Sunday.
On the Saturday we are visiting 3 buildings.
**Royal Courts of Justice (built in 1874)**
Architect G.E Street's iconic masterpiece set in the heart of London and one of Victorian England's great public buildings. 13th Century Gothic style given a Victorian interpretation. Commissioned by Queen Victoria in the 1870 's to build the home for Civil Justice for the United Kingdom. The cathedral-like Magnificent Great Hall leads off to Historic Oak Panelled Courtrooms. Inside there will be famous court case re-enactments.
Finish at 2:00pm and walk to the next building.
Arrive at the Church of Scotland building - 2:15pm.
**Crown Court Church of Scotland (built in 1909)**
A Church of Scotland in London, home to the longest-established Presbyterian congregation in London, worshipping in this location in Covent Garden since 1719. The current building is red brick with Portland stone dressings in a restrained, finely crafted Free Style. Three storeys, recessed slated attic, mullioned and transomed windows. Fine stained glass, most of which is by Farrar Bell.
Finish at 3:00pm and walk to the next building.
Arrive at the Quakers Meeting House - 3:15pm.
**Westminster Quaker Meeting House (built in 1883)**
Built in 1883, with front doors added in the 1920s. It was bomb-damaged in 1941 and rebuilt in 1956. Grade II listed registered place of worship, it contains a peaceful meeting room and 1950s wood panelling and fittings.
Finish at 4:00pm and head to the pub.
