Beginner-friendly art session! We’ll be using gouache to paint a traditional Eritrean/Ethiopian coffee pot. All materials provided.

In this guided session, you'll each recreate a reference painting of a Jebena - a traditional Ethiopian/Eritrean clay coffee pot in which delicious buna/ boon (coffee) is brewed and served. We will be using gouache paints and painting onto watercolour boards.

No prior experience is needed—this workshop is beginner friendly and perfect for anyone looking to unwind, learn, and connect through art. All materials are included.

Biography:

Alem Derege (b. 1997) is a London-based painter and illustrator whose practice is inspired by her East African heritage. Her work explores themes of culture, community, identity and legacy. She holds a BA in Architecture from the University of Sheffield, and an MA in Migration and Diaspora Studies from SOAS, University of London. She is currently working on her debut oil painting series ‘Daughters of Eritrea’. This collection of artworks celebrate the strong female figures in her life - almost all of whom left home and settled in Europe or the US, and highlight the ways in which they maintain their cultural identity despite new surroundings.
