A workshop titled 'PWL London: ADTs and CLU with Kevlin Henney' will take place on 11 November 2026 at Monzo in London. The session will explore the historical context and significance of abstract data types and the CLU programming language, focusing on work by Barbara Liskov.
**[Kevlin Henney](https://about.me/kevlin)** **presents:** "[Programming with Abstract Data Types](http://jpk.pku.edu.cn/course/sjjg/chapter1/resource/Programming%20with%20Abstract%20Data%20Types.pdf)" (1974) and "[Abstraction Mechanism in CLU](https://web.eecs.umich.edu/~weimerw//2008-615/reading/liskov-clu-abstraction.pdf)" (1977) by Barbara Liskov (and collaborators). **Abstract** Data abstraction arrived in the 1970s as a paradigm in its own right. It became absorbed into other paradigms, from object orientation to functional, and has heavily influenced programming language design since. At the heart and start of this was Barbara Liskov's work with the CLU language. In this talk we'll take a trip back to the mid-1970s to explore work led by Liskov in "Programming with Abstract Data Types" and "Abstraction Mechanism in CLU", taking in the context in which these ideas emerged and the long-term influences on program and language design. **The Speaker** Kevlin Henney is an independent advisor, consultant, speaker and writer. He has written and edited books on software architecture, patterns and development practices, and been active in the C++ standardisation process. Kevlin has contributed to open source, to the Modern Software Engineering YouTube channel, and has written for many publications, including The Register and the O'Reilly Radar. https://about.me/kevlin **Location**: Appold St and Worship St corner London EC2A 2AG https://maps.app.goo.gl/GmCdcBLBCLR2ifou7 The nearest tube/train station is Liverpool St The entrance is located at the street level.
