TASTADE, a major global scientific collaboration, is a €10 million research project funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and led by Professor William Pettigrew. Join Professor William Pettigrew. Dr Nicholas Radburn and Dr Lila Chambers as they discuss the Register of British Slave Traders project, its findings on the merchants who financed and organised Britain's slave trade and what insights this allows on the lives of the enslaved people.

Speakers

Professor William Pettigrew (King's College London)

A historian of Britain's contribution to the transatlantic traffic in enslaved African people with expertise both in the traffic managed by joint stock companies and the leaders of the 'free trade' in enslaved Africans. Since 2021 he has led the most comprehensive research and analysis ever undertaken into Britain's involvement with the transatlantic traffic in enslaved African people. A prize-winning historian, Pettigrew is also series consultant on the BBC 2 TV series Britain's Forgotten Slave Traders, which is based on his team's findings and will be broadcast in autumn 2026.

Dr Nicholas Radburn (Lancaster University)

A historian of the Atlantic World, with a particular focus on the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. His 2023 monograph “Traders in Men: Merchants and the Transformation of the Transatlantic Slave Trade” (Yale University Press) won the 2024 James A. Rawley Prize in Atlantic History from the American Historical Association, and was a finalist for the Wolfson History Prize, the Hagley Prize in Business History; the Paul Lovejoy Prize; and the Slaveryarchive book prize.

Dr Lila Chambers (University of Cambridge)

A historian of race, slavery, and commodification in the early modern Atlantic. Her research traces the intertwined development of political economy, diplomacy, and race in West Africa, the Caribbean, the British Isles, and North America between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries
