Step out of London and into centuries of history on this scenic walk through the Lee Valley, beginning near Waltham Abbey. You’ll make your way to the magnificent Waltham Abbey Church, a site with almost a thousand years of history and closely linked to King Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England. Explore the abbey grounds and see the traditional site of Harold’s burial following his death at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, before leaving the town behind and joining the waterways, towpaths and open landscapes of the Lee Valley. From here, you’ll follow the River Lea and its network of canals, lakes and nature reserves south towards Cheshunt, where we’ll stop for lunch beside the water. After lunch, continue north through the quieter stretches of the valley towards Broxbourne, enjoying an easy-going mix of riverside paths, wildlife and wide-open views along the way. At the finish, there’s the option to round off the day properly with a drink at a beautiful riverside pub, relax by the water and catch up with the group before making your way home.
