EeCheng Ong leads a workshop on concept checks to address illusions of knowing on 30 October 2026. The session aims to help educators build students' conceptual knowledge. In-person attendance is limited to 15 people, with online access also available for free.
Students, as novice learners, often operate in a state of unconscious incompetence and tend to be overconfident in their level of understanding. Meanwhile, teachers, as domain experts, may assume a state of unconscious competence, which could lead them to overestimate students’ grasp of new material. Both students and teachers fall prey to illusions of knowing, which often occur when students prioritise factual and procedural knowledge over conceptual knowledge. EeCheng Ong (National University of Singapore) will walk through how to formulate concept checks — short and focused questions, targeting specific learning bottlenecks — to build students’ conceptual knowledge and metacognitive knowledge. Please note this event has a limited in-person capacity of 15. It will be possible to attend online using Microsoft teams. Access details will be shared in the coming weeks.
