About This Event

The Museum of the Order of St John invites you to a unique Talk and Tea event on Thursday 13 August, commencing at 12:30pm. This complimentary session will feature Marleen, the National Collections Manager, who will illuminate the fascinating life of Charles Hanmer. Hanmer, a somewhat overlooked historical figure, carved out a notable niche through his diverse endeavours. Attendees will gain insight into his significant contributions to the mining industry, his passionate advocacy for the principles of first aid, and his pioneering involvement in the nascent world of early cinema. It presents a splendid opportunity to uncover a less commonly celebrated facet of history, all within the evocative and atmospheric surroundings of the museum.

Join National Collections Manager Marleen as she shares the story of a remarkable man.

Discover more about the Order of St John, St John Ambulance and the history of Clerkenwell at our free Ten-Minute Talk and Tea events. Tea and biscuits provided.

This talk will explore the life and achievements of one of St John’s fiercest advocates. A miner from South Yorkshire, Charles Hanmer (1884 - 1951) understood the dangerous working conditions underground and the vital importance of first aid better than most. Having led the rescue team following the Cadeby Colliery Disaster in 1912, he decided to focus on promoting first aid skills. As the official Lecturer for the Brigade, he travelled to every corner of the country for over a decade, using films produced himself to train and recruit thousands of St John volunteers.

This is a free, relaxed event. Drop-ins are welcome, or you can pre-register through Eventbrite. The event will take place in the Museum Galleries which are on ground level with step-free access throughout.
