The Jellicoe Lecture will be delivered on 23 November 2026 at 5 Endeavour Square, London. Jake Fiennes will discuss the impact of historic government policy on Britain's countryside and the need for a re-evaluation of land use. The lecture honours the legacy of Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe, a prominent figure in landscape architecture.
Jake Fiennes explores how historic government policy has shaped Britain’s countryside and why we must rethink how land is used.
Each year, the Jellicoe lecture celebrates the life and work of Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe, architect, landscape architect, and founding member of the LI.
This year's lecture will be delivered by Jake Fiennes, Director of Conservation at Holkham Estate, a National Nature Reserve in Norfolk visited by a million people annually. Jake has 35 years' experience in land management and is Chair of the National Nature Reserve Advisory Group, member of the National Estate for Nature and panel member on the Designated Landscapes Glover Review 2019. He is author of Land Healer, published in 2022.
About the lecture
In his lecture, Jake will explore how historic government policy has shaped Britain’s countryside and why we must rethink how land is used to meet today’s challenges. He argues for a landscape-scale approach that integrates food production, nature recovery, water management, carbon storage, forestry and public access.
Moving beyond isolated nature reserves and rigid land-use categories, he advocates place-based policy, natural processes and stronger partnerships between farmers, landowners, conservationists and government.
The lecture will challenge us to move from preserving inherited landscapes to designing a productive, resilient and biodiverse countryside for future generations.
There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the issues raised.
Learning outcomes
Understanding of how historic land use policy has shaped the British countryside.
Evaluate how multifunctional land use can deliver nature recovery at scale.
Identify practical principles for achieving landscape-scale change.
