The Seven Deadly Sins / The Human Voice at The Arches, London brings together two one-woman operas in a single evening. Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s The Seven Deadly Sins follows Anna on a seven-year journey through the cities of America, while Francis Poulenc and Jean Cocteau’s The Human Voice centres on Elle and the last conversation of a love affair.

Performed together, the works create a continuous psychological portrait of a woman pushed to her limits. Weill’s score draws on Weimar cabaret and 1930s American jazz, while Poulenc’s music follows the rhythm of speech in a single, unbroken phone call. Both operas pair major composers with celebrated literary collaborators.
