An accessible journey through Hackney's busy and ever-changing southern quarter.
Shoreditch Old and New: a tour
Join us for a guided tour through Hackney's southernmost, and arguably its most interesting, quarter. From St Leonard's Church to the Sun Street Conservation Area, from Stone Age artefacts to sleek new skyscrapers, the route will take in a succession of diverse points of interest.
Learn about built heritage at risk, differing contemporary approaches to urban design, and archaeology as part of the planning process. We will finish at the Flying Horse pub, for a drink and sit down, to try and make sense of it all.
The tour will be led by Rob Briggs. Rob is a trustee of the Hackney Society, and Chair of the Buildings at Risk Group. He is a former historic environment record manager, son of an architect, and a Hackney resident since 2015.
The route is do-able by wheelchair, save for one optional point, if the lift to reach it has not been repaired.
Meet in St Leonard’s Churchyard, Northside, where there should be coffee for sale, from 10:45 for an 11am start. The tour will be over by 1:00pm, at the Flying Horse, 52 Wilson Street EC2A 2ER, with the chance of a pub conversation to follow.
The event costs £5 for Hackney Society members (£6.13 with booking fees) and £10 for guests (£11.55 with booking fees).
Booking opens for Hackney Society members on 4th August and for guests/non-members on 11th August.
