UNGA 81 Debrief: Iona Thomas, FCDO Director for Multilateral & Human Rights

September’s High-Level Week at the UNGA brought 130 heads of state and government to New York—the world’s largest and most inclusive multilateral gathering. Britain’s new Prime Minister spoke there about the need to take inspiration from the founding of the General Assembly in London in 1946 and to apply a similar level of ambition “to renew the UN for our times”. Thousands of civil society groups, including UNA-UK and many of our partners, came together in New York to discuss ideas from around the world on how this renewal should happen.

What really happens at these meetings beyond the headlines, and how will Britain take the work and ideas forward in its upcoming G20 Chairmanship? We are delighted to be joined by Iona Thomas, who was closely involved in the UK’s work at UNGA, to hear more about what was achieved in New York and what the next steps will be, and we’ll have the opportunity to share and discuss civil society perspectives on the future of the UN and the UK’s role there.
