Artistic research offers distinctive ways to understand complex social environments through relational practice, collaboration, and site-responsive inquiry. To open the workshop, artist-researcher Julie Marsh, together with Priya Gill from Nanaksar Sikh Temple in Coventry, will introduce Site-Integrity, an artistic research methodology developed through long-term collaborations with community partners. Their presentation will foreground the collaborative and relational nature of the project, exploring how knowledge and research questions emerge through sustained relationships, shared making, and ongoing dialogue. Drawing on a series of collaborative projects, they will invite discussion of how artistic research can broaden interdisciplinary understandings of sequestration and generate distinctive forms of knowledge across disciplinary boundaries.

In the second part of the workshop, Andreas Aresti and Sacha Darke will reflect on their extensive experience researching the penal system in Britain. Their presentations will focus on the ethical and methodological challenges of researching experiences of sequestration in UK prisons.

This workshop is part of a series of interdisciplinary workshops exploring the theme of “Sequestered Communities in Britain”, funded by the Interdisciplinary Innovation Fund (Research Communities, University of Westminster) and led by Professor Tarik Sabry.
