So how do you sum up CGUK? (Ian Williams - Smarti Pants)

Imagine if you could pick your neighbours and surround yourself with those whose only aim in life was to make others happy. Now add in leading lecturers covering subjects that cover the whole range of clowning from Play and Slapstick to Costume and props with diversions through puppetry, balloons and magic.

I get something from every talk regardless of subject. Eg i never do magic as a clown BUT i learned some great stuff in Amanda’s lecture last year when she thought she was teaching me how to present magic better that i’ve applied to my Strongman act with Bobbo and some nifty bits from Ian Thom this year that i will be working into a nightclub act.

There are of course the lectures and workshops that you just have to attend to see, in the 1st year for me that was Simon Thomson’s Finding Play but i soon discovered other gems whilst i was there. Over the years i've attended i have learned about hospital clowning, sketch writing, physical comedy, balloons, backdrops, walkabout props, truth in performance, history of clowns from 2 living legends who have actually lived it: ICHOF inductee Arthur Pedlar and Circus Royalty Bobbo Roberts. Meisner techniques, make up application, costumes, Bouffon, Mask work the list goes on..

I’ve taught a few too in my 3 years there i’ve taught slapstick theory, walkabout entertaining, prop making and how to make your own nose.

I’ve honed my skills and applied techniques I’ve learned at the workshops performing on the stage of the gorgeous Seagull theatre in the 2 shows we put on showcasing different clowning styles to the public.

I’ve workshopped with artists who have toured with circuses, worked holiday parks, performed on the streets, in front of royalty, and at birthday parties and you know what? When you workshop with clowns of all disciplines strange things happen you find people you look up to laughing at your humour and you at theirs, there are no egos at CGUK everyone is there for the same reason a love of clowning. We all have different markets and ways to work when we get back but boy is it a good way to recharge the batteries before the busy season and come back refreshed and bursting with new ideas
