About This Event

Bunker Talk #170 will feature Nicola Dale discussing Gothic Studies. This event is part of the Bunker Talks series, which invites researchers and artists to speak about their work at The Salutation Pub.

This event is part of Bunker Talks. Bunker Talks invite artists and researchers to talk about who they are and what they do.

Adventures in Objecthood

Nicola will discuss her position as a visual artist working between sculpture and performance, movement and stillness, the contemporary and archival. With reference to her performance ‘In Mourning’ for The Whitaker Museum and other recent commissions, she will explore how her interests play out across solo, collaborative and participatory work. Whether through reimagining the everyday, reframing bygone rituals or inventing new objects to let loose on the public, she will make a case for the importance of touch, gesture and interaction.

Nicola Dale works in the crevice between performance and sculpture. She has performed at major national galleries including Saatchi, The Hepworth Wakefield and Turner Contemporary, and exhibited at publicly funded, commercial and alternative spaces in the UK and beyond. Nicola has extensive experience of collaboration and her work is included in both private and institutional collections.

She is based at Rogue Studios, Manchester and is Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Leeds Arts University. This talk is presented in association with the Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies.

Bunker Talks

This event is part of Bunker Talks. Bunker Talks invite artists and researchers to talk about who they are and what they do. Curated by the Performance Research Group at Manchester School of Art and the School of English, Bunker Talks explore geopolitical, ecological or economic concerns. The talks create space for critical encounters, presentations, provocation and dialogue as part of a civic conversation.

Originally conceived in the pandemic to explore how artists, writers, curators and researchers continued to make and share their work, live Bunker Talks now take place at The Salutation every month. Since 2020, over 170 talks have been hosted by Performance Researchers and colleagues from across the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. All talks are recorded, edited, captioned and then archived to create an online catalogue, capturing how artists, makers and curators think about the world today.
