The Ballad of Maria Marten is a play written by Beth Flintoff that dramatizes the 1827 "Red Barn Murder" from the perspective of the victim and the women in her life, rather than focusing purely on the gruesome crime. Synopsis • The Disappearance: In the summer of 1827, in the Suffolk village of Polstead, a young woman named Maria Marten goes to meet her lover at a local red barn, planning to elope. She never returns home. • The Discovery: A year passes while Maria remains missing. Her body is eventually found hidden in a grain sack buried beneath the floor of the red barn, barely recognizable. • Reclaiming the Narrative: Unlike traditional, sensationalized retellings that focused on the gore of the crime and the killer, Flintoff's play uses an all-female cast and lets Maria break the fourth wall to tell her own story. • Themes: The drama explores Maria’s life, her friendships (such as the "Hazard Club"), working-class resilience, economic survival, and how society and the press historically silenced women.
