Discover Alan Turing's Manchester on our free guided walking tour exploring the historic sites that shaped the birth of the modern computer.
About This Tour
Alan Turing, renowned codebreaker and "father of computer science" arrived in Manchester in 1948 at the dawn of the digital age. Manchester became his home and workplace for the final six years of his short life, a pivotal period during which he made extraordinary contributions to computer science and artificial intelligence.
Join us for Part 1 of the Manchester Computing History series. During this two-hour guided walking tour around the Piccadilly area, you'll discover why Turing moved to Manchester, visit locations connected with his life and work, and uncover surprising stories, hidden details and little-known connections that even many Mancunians have never discovered.
Led by Alan O'Donohoe, a passionate Computing teacher and Turing enthusiast, this informal and engaging tour explores how Manchester helped shape the modern digital world. You'll also receive a printed tour guide to take home, allowing you to revisit the route at your own pace or share it with friends, colleagues and students.
After the walk, you're invited to join us at a nearby café for an informal debrief, discussion and the opportunity to chat with fellow participants. There's no obligation to stay, but it's a great chance to ask questions and continue the conversation.
