HOW DID MANCHESTER GET SO BLOODY QUEER?

Explore Manchester’s world-famous Gay Village and Canal Street through the monuments, memorials, secret street art and legendary pubs that tell the city’s LGBT+ story.

Hear about underground Victorian drag balls, “secret” gay languages, 19th-century trans lives, HIV activism, all-night parties and the campaigners who changed, and are still changing, Manchester in surprising ways. Expect well-researched history mixed with gossip, politics and camp.

Josh is a native Mancunian with an MA in History specialising in Manchester’s LGBT+ history. He founded FMWT in 2015 and works professionally with LGBTQ+ oral histories as co-director of IAP:MCR.

At the end, Josh shares tailored recommendations for queer bars, clubs, cafés, community spaces and other things to do. The tour welcomes LGBTQ+ visitors and locals, solo travellers, friends, allies and anyone curious about Manchester’s queer history.
