About This Event

The Manchester Museum is hosting a creative workshop titled Mapping the Heavens: Constellations in Islamic Astronomy. Participants can explore Islamic astronomy and create a constellation story. Tickets are priced at Free.

Explore the stars through Islamic astronomy and create your own constellation story in this creative workshop!

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered what stories the stars might tell?

Join us on a journey through the rich astronomical traditions of the Muslim world, where constellations were more than patterns of stars. They were characters in folk tales, symbols woven into cultural traditions, and keys to understanding the cosmos.

In this interactive workshop, we will explore The Book of Fixed Stars, the seminal 10th century work of the Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi. Combining scientific observation with beautiful artistic illustrations, this text shaped the study of astronomy across the Muslim world, from Andalusia to India, and influenced generations of astronomers.

Inspired by al-Sufi's constellation illustrations, you'll then have the opportunity to design your own constellation, create its story, and imagine what it might represent in the night sky. Perfect for curious minds, aspiring astronomers, artists, and storytellers of all ages.

Everyone welcome to participate.

This workshop is in collaboration with the Umm al-Nujum project at the University of Portsmouth and the MIE Anti-Racist Network.
