Sugar was once the height of luxury, but its sweetness came at a bitter cost. In this hands-on workshop, participants will first be shown how to shape and decorate sugar-paste from an early modern recipe. Using simple tools and natural colours, you’ll be able create beautiful delicacies! After that, participants will be given pre-cut pieces of raw sugarcane and use various tools to explore first-hand how difficult it is to extract refined sugar from its raw form. Along the way, we’ll uncover how sugar dazzled European courts and dinner tables, and how that glittering world depended on brutal labour, slavery, and empire. Strictly for ages 18+ years.
