About This Event

Rebel Book Club Manchester x CRISIS RESPONSE will host a literary event on 29 September 2026 at x+why 100 Embankment to explore the theme of crisis response. Tickets are priced between £8.83 and £16.96.

Join us for RBC's September event as we explore this month's theme, Crisis Response, via Annie Jacobsen's book, "Nuclear War. A Scenario".

About the book:

Until now, no one outside official circles has known exactly what would happen if a rogue state launched a nuclear missile at the Pentagon. Second by second and minute by minute, these are the real-life protocols that choreograph the end of civilization as we know it. Based on dozens of new interviews with military and civilian experts who have built the weapons, been privy to the response plans, and taken responsibility for crucial decisions, this is the only account of what a nuclear exchange would look like.

Why we chose it: "Essential if you want to understand the complex and disturbing details that go into a civilization-destroying decision to drop the Bomb on an enemy.” - The New York Times

Your host for the evening

Omar Latif

Omar is the founder of an AI startup and also pursuing a PhD in Behavioural AI. One big reason Omar joined RBC is to get away from academic literature, gain knowledge in areas outside of his interests and to have engaging conversations with the awesome community.

There is a clear alliance with the philosophy and taste of RBC as Omar has already read 70% of the books from the Rebel Book Club library!

Sarah Irving

Co-host Sarah is a born-and-bred Northerner working in a cat-tech startup (yes, really!), while also creating walks for another start-up. She’s also a cat sitter and should probably find time to rest.

She joined Rebel Book Club after a long search for a non-fiction book group, somewhere she could chat about ideas that broaden her worldview and meet new people. She loves all kinds of non-fiction and is always up for recommendations to add to the ‘to be read’ pile.
