About This Event

The Beginners Bronze Navigation Course will take place over two days, focusing on practical skills in map and compass navigation around Roseberry Topping. This course aims to enhance safety in outdoor settings when electronic devices fail. It is scheduled to start on 9 January 2027 at The King's Head Inn in Newton under Roseberry.

A practical 2-day map & compass course around Roseberry Topping to keep you safe when batteries die.

How confident are you when your phone battery dies, your mapping app glitches, or a sudden downpour renders your touchscreen useless mid-walk? Phone apps and GPX routes are great - until they fail.

The NNAS Bronze Navigator Award is a 2-day hands-on, practical foundation course designed to teach you genuine self-reliance in the outdoors. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced walker tired of sticking strictly to easy, well-defined paths, this course gives you the essential skills and "get out of jail free" techniques needed to handle unexpected weather and tricky terrain.

Set against the rugged backdrop of Roseberry Topping and the North York Moors, you’ll learn directly on the hill with practical, real-world instruction.

What You Will Master:

- Real-World Relocation: What to do when you're lost or unsure, and how to pinpoint your position without GPS.

- Contours & Landforms: How to read the shape of the land on paper so you can "see" the ground before walking it.

- Compass Skills: How to orientate your map quickly with and without a compass.

- Distance & Timing: How to measure distance accurately using map scale, pacing, and timing.

- Route Planning & Strategy: How to design safe, enjoyable routes and adapt them when weather turns.

- Safety & Environment: Understanding access rights, emergency procedures, essential hill kit, and the Countryside Code.

Location & Transport

- Base: North-Western tip of the North York Moors National Park, surrounding Roseberry Topping.

- Vantage: Stunning terrain with panoramic views across Teesside, the Yorkshire & Durham Dales, and the North Sea.

- Transport Links: Excellent rail links to nearby Great Ayton. Conveniently located 10 miles from Middlesbrough and 25 miles from Darlington.
