About this Event
Rocks along the Durham Coast were formed around 255 Ma in an inland sea – the Zechstein. Changing sea levels repeatedly cut off the Zechstein from its source resulting in the sea drying up.
Magnesian Limestone formed in the basin, capped by salt layers during the last stages of evaporation. 5 cycles of flooding and evaporation are recognised, three of which are present in the north-east.
The uppermost of these is the Seaham Formation which is exposed in the cliffs behind Crimdon Beach. Amazing concretions, breccias and fossils are present, along with an unusual band of orange sediment.
Essential equipment
Sturdy footwear, outdoor clothing, lunch.
