Effective trusteeship goes beyond understanding legal duties—it’s about working well together, setting clear direction, and managing risk so the charity can achieve its purpose with confidence. This practical session focuses on how boards can operate effectively, develop meaningful strategy, and manage risk in a proportionate, informed way.
What the session covers
• What makes an effective charity board, including culture, diversity, shared responsibility, and constructive challenge
• Clear roles and responsibilities within the board, including the responsibilities of all trustees, the Chair, Treasurer, and other office‑holders
• How to run effective board meetings, including agendas, papers, decision‑making, accessibility, and virtual or hybrid meetings
• The trustee role in developing strategy, linking vision, mission, values, and long‑term plans to public benefit
• Practical approaches to strategic planning for both small and large charities
• Understanding risk management, including the trustee role in identifying, assessing, and managing risk
• Different types of risk charities face—strategic, operational, financial, compliance, people, and governance risks
• How trustees can make informed decisions about risk while supporting innovation and sustainability
Who is it for?
Ideal for current trustees, Chairs, Treasurers, committee members, and directors of charitable organisations, particularly those who have completed Trustee Training Part 1 or already understand the basic legal duties of trusteeship.
Also valuable for senior staff who work closely with trustee boards.
Why attend?
A strong board improves decision‑making, protects the charity, and helps it thrive in a changing environment. Trustees who understand their strategic role and approach risk confidently are better equipped to lead effectively.
