Dir. RaMell Ross / USA / 2018 / 1h 16m

Hale County This Morning, This Evening is a lyrical innovation to the form of portraiture that boldly ruptures racist aesthetic frameworks that have historically constricted the expression of African American men on film.

In the lives of protagonists Daniel and Quincy, quotidian moments and the surrounding southern landscape are given importance, drawing poetic comparisons between historical symbols and the African American banal. Images are woven together to replace narrative arc with visual movements. As Ross crafts an inspired tapestry made up of time, the human soul, history, environmental wonder, sociology, and cosmic phenomena, a new aesthetic framework emerges that offers a new way of seeing and experiencing the heat, and the hearts of people in the Black Belt region of the US as well far beyond.

‘There is something visionary in this film.’ —The Guardian ★★★★★

Shooting the Messenger

November 2026 – March 2027

Films on Photographers, Photographers on Film. What drives photographers to frame, to capture, to record? Sometimes compulsion, sometimes necessity, always curiosity.

Across five documentaries, this season looks at photography and photographers – their desires and struggles, passions and fears – to accompany Baltic’s current exhibition Tish Murtha & Kuba Ryniewicz: Close to Home.

The films propose photography as a lifetime’s quest and suggest that for many photographers – whether railing against the system, documenting their communities or pushing the boundaries of the medium – the more they take photographs, the more they know themselves.
