Join us for an evening exploring the wine and history associated with one of medieval Europe’s most powerful institutions: the papacy. Dr Andrew Ferrara, Durham University, delves into how the popes and viticulture were intertwined throughout the Middle Ages, while we present contemporary wines from the associated regions, alongside some nibbles and canapés derived from 14th century recipes. The evening will be split into three parts, beginning with the early Papacy based in Rome, followed by the papal states of High Middle Ages in central Italy, and the third examining the popes in Avignon, France. Each part will be followed by a short tasting of wine alongside some nibbles and canapés based on contemporary regional recipes. Dr Andrew Ferrara is Career Development Fellow in the Archaeology Department at Durham University. His research focuses on the use and development of medieval episcopal castles and palaces. Previously he was curator at the Auckland Project, Co. Durham, and Norwich Castle for its £27m refurbishment project. Hosted in conjunction with Eat Medieval, with grateful thanks to Professor Giles Gasper and Durham University (Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies) for their help and support. TIMES: 6-8pm COST: £39.50 including the talk, three wine samples and canapé nibbles. Places are only confirmed once paid in full and are non-refundable or transferable. DIETARY REQUIREMENTS: Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements at the time of booking, health conditions we should know about or any other specific requests. Please re-confirm on arrival. BLACKFRIARS EVENTS & COURSES SELL OUT QUICKLY SO BOOK NOW! Please note; if it shows no online availability, the event is sold out.
