The event 'Queering North East History: Archiving Ourselves' will take place on 26 October 2026 at One Strawberry Lane. Jaime Starr and the team will explore the concept of a queer archive, and attendance is free.
Join Jaime Starr and the Queering North East History team as we ask "What is a queer archive?"
As we begin the journey to create a digital archive of the North East’s queer heritage, LGBTQIA+ community historian, curator and archivist, Jaime Starr, will lead participants of this workshop to grow our collective idea of what a queer archive can be, and how they can be used to highlight the everyday present and past of LGBTQIA+ lives lived.
When we hear the word archive, many of us imagine vast stores of official government documents, hidden away from public view in formal buildings, only accessible to researchers. But archives can be so much more. From artworks created with personal items to memory boxes of photographs, concert tickets and diaries, to community collections of protest material, the queer idea of an archive expands in many directions.
Participants are invited to bring along a small selection (1-5 items) of their own personal archives to curate and share with other participants during the session.
It will be possible to photograph or scan your items at the end of the session, if you would like to add any to the Queering North East History digital archive.
Places are FREE but must be booked. If you book a place and are no longer able to attend, please email heritage@curiousarts.org.uk to let us know.
This event forms part of Queering North East History - a Curious Arts project, funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund.
