Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Day is observed annually on 25 August. It commemorates the events that began on 25 August 2017, when Myanmar’s military launched operations in Rakhine State that resulted in mass killings, widespread human rights abuses, and the displacement of more than 700,000 Rohingya people.

Hear from Rohingya campaigners, take part in a panel discussion on the Rohingya Genocide- Past, Present and Future, and join a Q&A session.

We are also delighted to welcome photojournalist Salim Khan, who will be joining us live from the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Salim Khan’s book, A Million Faces of Resilience: Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh, will be available for purchase during the event.

On 12 April 2026, Newcastle upon Tyne unveiled the world’s first permanent memorial dedicated to the victims and survivors of the Rohingya genocide. Located in Newcastle City Council’s Peace Garden, the memorial stands as a permanent tribute to those who lost their lives and those forced to flee their homeland. The event will conclude with a walk to the Memorial Garden for a moment of reflection and prayer.

Rohingya Action North East (RANE) extends a warm invitation to everyone to attend and show their support.
