Context
Substance use can intersect with self-neglect, exploitation, domestic abuse, homelessness, poor physical health, mental ill health and risks to family members. These situations often raise complex questions about autonomy, mental capacity, engagement, risk and the responsibilities of different agencies.
Using current legislation, safeguarding principles and multi-agency best practice, participants will explore how to identify concerns, conduct person-centred assessments and make proportionate, defensible decisions. The course will also consider prevention, early intervention, protection and access to appropriate health, social care and substance-use support.

The course is suitable for experienced practitioners, managers and safeguarding professionals working with adults across the following:
Adult social care
Health and mental health services
Drug and alcohol services

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
Explain the prevalence, causes, risk factors and wider effects of drug and alcohol use on adults, families and communities.
Recognise indicators of substance use and related safeguarding concerns.
Understand how substance use may increase vulnerability to neglect, self-neglect, exploitation, domestic abuse, and co-occurring mental health needs.
