A session titled 'Drug and Alcohol Brief Intervention and Screening' will take place at the Norman Centre in Norwich on September 23rd. This free event aims to enhance knowledge of drug and alcohol screening tools used across Norfolk. Attendees can build practical skills using this information.
Enhance your knowledge of the range of drug and alcohol screening tools used in Norfolk and build the skills to use them effectively.
The training is provided by Alasdair Cant & Associates Ltd in partnership with Change Grow Live and Norfolk County Council.
Alasdair Cant is a qualified trainer of trainers and ensures that different styles of learning are accommodated.
Please note that this is a full-day, in-person training session with no virtual alternative. Trainees are expected to attend the whole day.
Training Objectives:
-- To know the key drug and alcohol screening tools, their main strengths and pitfalls and how to maximise and minimise these accordingly;
-- To gain a clear understanding of what a brief intervention is, what it is not and how this approach relates to other interventions;
-- To know and be able to apply the values of strengths-based working at every stage of an interaction;
-- To be able to use the cycle of behaviour change to focus, inform and boundary the conversation;
-- To become familiar with a few key brief interventions that stimulate thinking and promote self-responsibility;
-- To ensure a trauma-informed approach and draws upon the fundamentals of Motivational Interviewing;
-- To have opportunities to practise these skills in a safe learning environment and receive immediate feedback.
Why attend?
This will be a highly interactive day with a blend of activity, reflection, theoretical input and planning of how to apply the learning in our own work settings.
The day will be based on sound research of the commonly used screening tools in Norfolk, and participants will be invited in addition to bring to the session examples of what they are currently using, if relevant.
The behaviour change element of the programme draws on the spirit and framework of Motivational Interviewing to ensure that in every interaction we are engaging meaningfully, focusing every conversation purposefully and drawing out motivation within individuals wherever possible. All of this will help us use the screening tools more effectively to then plan the next steps with people and not for them.
