FitzRoy has supported people with learning disabilities and autistic people for over 60 years across England and is a QACLS approved Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training provider. We are delighted to offer Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability & Autism training in person with our lived experience trainers.
Location: Wymondham Rugby Club, Norwich
Date: Friday 30th October
Time: 9:30am - 4:30pm
Tea and coffee are included; however, please bring your own lunch to the training.
Price: £90* + VAT

Course Pre-Requisites:
All learners must hold an in date completion certificate from the following online module:
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism - eLearning for healthcare (e-lfh.org.uk)
Tier 2 Course Description:
This 1-day face to face course consists of a half-day session on learning disability and a half day session on autism. The day covers an overview of what a learning disability and autism is, including knowledge of the positive impact of applying legislation into the day to day lives of people with a learning disability or autism. Delegates will be able to reflect on their own and organisational practice and consider an action plan for required changes in practice.
This training is co-delivered with an expert with lived experienced of learning disabilities and an expert with lived experienced of autism. This Tier 2 course is mapped to the learning outcomes set out in “Right to be Heard” (DHSC, 2019) and Core Capabilities Frameworks for Supporting People with a Learning Disability and Core Capabilities Framework for Supporting Autistic People.
Learning outcomes:
Half-day (morning) session: Learning disability:
• Acknowledge and understand our unconscious biases to avoid diagnostic overshadowing.
• Learning from the Lives and Deaths review, including co-morbidities
• STOMP – Stop the overmedication of people with a learning disability campaign
• Understand what reasonable adjustments are and how to make them
• How and when to use and apply The Mental Capacity Act 2005
• How and when to use and apply DNACPR
• Improving communication
• The importance of the role of hospital passports and annual health checks
• Self-reflection – What can you do differently
Half-day (afternoon) session: Autism:
• Why autism is described as an invisible condition
• Reflecting on your own values and beliefs
• Recognising potential triggers for anxiety
• Identifying reasonable adjustments and ways to adapt your practice
• Legislation and resources for inclusive enabling services
• Implementing actions from lessons learnt from Oliver
• Self-reflection – What can you do differently
