The building’s use as a law court is recorded as early as 1375, and its role as a prison is documented by 1449, meaning countless individuals were tried, imprisoned, and even executed on the premises over hundreds of years. Public hangings took place at the site until the mid‑19th century, and after 1832 executions moved to a scaffold erected over the stone steps of the Shire Hall—an especially grim detail that fuels much of the museum’s ghostly atmosphere today. With its Georgian and Victorian cells, long histories of punishment, and preserved gallows, the museum’s authentic spaces create an unnerving sense of stepping directly into the past, where echoes of former inmates and judges seem to linger in every corridor.
