About This Event

The Indian Community Centre Association will host Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Part 2 (Tier 2) on 12 November 2026. This government-recommended programme targets health and social care providers dealing with learning disability and autism.

The OMMT on Learning Disability and Autism is the UK Government's recommended training programme for health and social care providers.

Agenda

Morning 9.30am-12.30pm– Learning Disability: understanding lived experience, LeDeR findings, quality of care, and making reasonable adjustments.

Afternoon 1.30pm-4.30pm– Autism: understanding autism as an often invisible condition, recognising strengths and differences, identifying anxiety triggers, adapting practice, and applying relevant legislation.

Target Audience

Clinicians providing care and support for autistic people or people with a learning disability.

This event is for staff working in Primary Care in Nottingham & Nottinghamshire

Objectives

Understanding the lives, experiences, strengths and contributions of people with learning disabilities and autistic people.

Recognising factors that affect the quality and safety of care, including health inequalities.

Identifying and avoiding diagnostic overshadowing (where physical or mental health conditions are wrongly attributed to a person's learning disability or autism).

Understanding common co-occurring (co-morbid) conditions in autistic people and people with learning disabilities.

Applying relevant legislation, including:

Mental Capacity Act 2005

Human Rights Act 1998

Equality Act 2010

Autism Act 2009

Accessible Information Standard.

Knowing what reasonable adjustments are and how to implement them, including the use of hospital passports.

Reflecting on personal values, unconscious bias and professional behaviours that can influence care.

Communicating in accessible, person-centred ways and understanding what individuals and their families are communicating.

Recognising potential sensory differences, anxiety triggers and adapting care to meet individual needs.

Understanding the findings from Learning from Lives and Deaths Reviews (LeDeR) and how these can improve practice.

Understanding the STOMP (Stopping Over-Medication of People with a Learning Disability, Autism or Both) and STAMP (Supporting Treatment and Appropriate Medication in Paediatrics) initiatives.

Understanding the Ask Listen Do approach to listening to concerns, feedback and complaints from people, families and carers.

Important Information

• Once a booking has been confirmed, cancellations and non-attendance will be charged at the full course fee. Refunds cannot be provided.

• Attendance will be monitored through a register taken at both the morning and afternoon sessions. Participants are required to attend both halves to receive recognition of attendance. Failure to attend either part of the session may result in the training being recorded as incomplete and no certification of attendance being issued.

• Lunch is not provided for full-day sessions. Attendees should bring their own lunch and refreshments.

• We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule training sessions where insufficient bookings are received or in exceptional circumstances. Attendees will be notified as soon as possible should this occur.

Charges Explained

The ICB has funded the delivery of 12 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training sessions; however, venue costs are not included within this funding. A small charge is therefore applied to cover venue hire costs only.

Cancellation Policy

If you cancel with more than 5 working days' notice, there will be no charge. If you cancel within 5 working days and we cannot fill the space, then you/your organisation may still be charged. If you do not attend then you/your organisation may be charged.

If you are unable to attend and do not cancel your place on events repeatedly - this may risk your place at future events.
