A safe space to explore death, dying and grief through creative expression.
Powerful poetry. Honest conversation. Good food. A chance to create something personal.
Shades of Grief is a free event created especially with Nottingham’s Black African and Caribbean communities in mind, with a particular welcome for men.
Some experiences are difficult to put into words. This event offers a relaxed, protected space to explore death, dying and grief through spoken word, conversation and creativity. You can get involved, share what’s on your mind or simply listen - there’s no pressure to speak.
Live poetry from Chris Oliver
The evening will begin with a performance from poet Chris Oliver, bringing powerful words and lived experience into the room.
Chris’ performance will lead into a creative memory stones session with Michelle Mother Hubbard. Together, we’ll explore words and themes that connect with the group and use them to create a shared piece of expressive writing.
You’ll also have the option to write something of your own - perhaps a poem, reflection, affirmation or lyrics. No writing or creative experience is needed.
Make your own memory stone
We'll then take a word that holds meaning for you and turn it into a personalised memory stone.
You’ll be encouraged to slow down and connect with the weight, coolness and texture of the stone before decorating it in your own way. The finished stone could represent a person, memory, feeling, source of strength or something you want to carry forward.
The stones created during the evening will form part of a display at our final celebration event in 2027.
This isn’t about being “good at art” or finding the perfect words. It’s about taking some time, connecting with others and being part of something bigger – changing the way we approach and speak about death, dying and grief.
Free food and drinks
Come hungry! There will be free soup, chicken and dumplings, alongside hot and cold drinks throughout the evening.
The event is free and open to everyone aged 18 and over. Come on your own or bring someone with you.
