Oxford Open Doors at St Catherine's College
St Catherine’s College is the largest college within Oxford University and admits both undergraduate and graduate students. Its roots date back to 1868, when a ‘Delegacy for Non-Collegiate Students’ was formed. The modern college was founded in 1962 by Founding Master, Lord Alan Bullock. Designed by Danish architect, Arne Jacobsen, the College buildings are Grade I listed, and are a stunning example of 1960s architecture. The College motto ‘Nova et Vetera’: new things and old things’ is a statement of its traditional values and modern outlook.
The tour will focus on Jacobsen’s buildings and, as well as presenting the exterior of the College, will include the interiors of the Hall, the Junior Common Room, the Senior Common Room and the Music House. It will last approximately one hour.
The tour leaders know the College from 1974, the year that five Oxford colleges, including St Catherine’s, went from being men’s colleges to mixed ones.
