About This Event

Dr Amy Blakeway will explore the early days of Mary Queen of Scots and the lives of those under her rule at Falkland Palace & Garden on 18 September 2026. Prices range from £10.65 to £12.24.

Join us as Dr Amy Blakeway explores the early days of Mary Queen of Scots and the tumultuous lives of the people over whom she ruled.

Following the tragic death of her father, James V, at Falkland Palace, Mary, Queen of Scots ascended the throne aged just six days old. Eight years of violent war with England followed. This talk asks how this lengthy war affected Mary's country and her subjects. Stepping away from diplomatic intrigue we see burned crops, the terrors of plague, and a cost of living crisis. Drawing on new research this talk helps us get behind Scotland's most famous monarch to understand the people over whom she ruled.

Dr Amy Blakeway is a Senior Lecturer in Scottish History at the University of St Andrews. This talk draws on the research for her most recent book - War and Governance in Scotland 1543-1559 – which also forms the basis of the exhibition currently on display at the Wardlaw Museum in St Andrews.

The lecture will be followed by a short Qand A.

Please be aware the chapel is only accessable up one flight of spiral stairs.

Assistance dogs only.

Feel free to bring a cushion for additional comfort.
