About This Event

A workshop on 12 August 2026 at 32 Devonport Rd, where participants create coasters using Sashiko-inspired slow stitching, based on traditional Japanese grid patterns.

Discover traditional, layered designs based on Japanese Sashiko grid patterns while enjoying the calm rhythm of slow stitching.

Create a set of co-ordinating coasters while practising the gentle art of slow stitching, inspired by Japanese Sashiko. Learn how to weave extra threads under the traditional grid pattern to form a layered, woven design.

This workshop builds on the skills from ‘Introduction to Sashiko Inspired Slow Stitching’ and is a natural next step. It is not essential to have completed the introductory workshop, but we will be re-using some of the skills used in that workshop, making it a great opportunity to practise and develop your skills!

Sashiko is known for structured motifs made up from grids and interlocking shapes created through rows of steady, intentional stitching. This will build on the grids by adding a second, woven layer of stitching.

As you sew the rows of simple running stitches, then introduce the layers of woven threads, and perhaps contrasting colours, you will be able to see further beautiful, repeating geometric patterns being revealed. At the same time, the repetition of these stitches naturally encourages calm focus and presence.

You will have everything you need to complete the set of coasters although, depending on your familiarity of slow stitching in grids, you may not completely finish them all in the class. You will, however, have gained the skills to complete them easily at home – don’t forget – this is slow stitching, focussing on calm, mindful stitching, we are not in a hurry or a race, we are enjoining the process!

If you haven’t completed the introductory workshop, you may find it helpful to do that one next, in order to widen your understanding of the grid forms – look out for the next date to book!
