Empowerment Through Performance: from writing and DJing to putting on a night, learn how ideas become live culture. Tipp-Hop: Empowerment Through Performance is a free, hands-on workshop bringing together hip hop, DJing and the practical side of putting on live events. Taking place at Streamstown Arts Centre, Roscrea Rugby Club, on Saturday 26 September from 11.30am to 4.30pm, the day is aimed mainly at people aged 18 to 25, with some flexibility up to around 30. The workshop is built around three strands. GavinDaVinci will lead the hip hop session, looking at writing, performance, developing ideas and finding your own voice as an artist. The emphasis is on how work actually gets made, from the first idea through to something you can perform. Cillian Callaghan will lead the DJ strand, combining practical DJ skills with first-hand experience of building and promoting club nights through his RAVE ANONYMOUS events in Limerick. The third strand looks at event production and promotion, led by Ray Burke with industry guests. It will cover the practical side of making a gig happen: programming, budgeting, artist liaison, sound, venues, promotion, ticketing, security, running orders and all the work that goes on before the doors open. The day will mix conversation, practical exercises, audio and video, real examples and plenty of room for questions. No previous experience is needed. The idea is that you leave with a clearer sense of how to make something, perform it, promote it or put on a night of your own. And it doesn’t finish with the workshop. Tipp-Hop continues the following week at The Central Bar, Roscrea, on Saturday 3 October, with a live show featuring GavinDaVinci, Hazey Haze, Car€w, Strange Boy, Jade and more. Workshop participants will be invited to get involved in the live event, whether that means performing, DJing or working on the production side of the night. There’s no obligation to take part. It’s simply an opportunity to take something you’ve learned during the workshop and try it out in a real live setting. Make something. Learn how to put it out there. Then, if you want to, have a go at doing it for real.
