29.7.2189: A Soundwalk into the Future of St Catherine’s Oratory

Join artist Hector MacInnes on a sonic exploration of St Catherine’s Oratory now and in the future.

Hector has been working alongside members of the Isle of Wight National Landscape Youth Committee and the SWAY Hub in Chale, thinking about the place of the oratory in the landscape from a young person’s perspective. Looking ahead to the 29th of July 2189 as the prospective date on which the oratory might collapse into the sea, the groups have been listening at St Catherine's as a way to focus their concerns around coastal erosion, tourism, food resilience, climate change, AI and space travel.

This walk will follow their regular route to the site and back, listening with them to archaeologies of both distant past and distant future, and to the stories that young people have to tell about their landscape.

This event has been created for Landed, a programme of co-creation commissions by the Isle of Wight National Landscape, and is part of Can You Hear Us?

Practicalities

Participants are asked to meet at Blackgang Viewpoint Car Park just before 2pm. Please car-share where possible if driving, as parking is limited and the general public will also need the same car park.

This event involves a short but steep uphill walk including steps and a gate and unfortunately the site is not accessible to wheelchair users. If you have any questions about access or the terrain, please email hec.macinnes@gmail.com

- shoes and clothing appropriate to walking outdoors and exposure to unpredictable weather.

- plenty of water and a snack.
