A public lecture by Jose J. Benitez-Williams
After the sweltering heatwaves of Summer 2026, the impact of climate change is more visible than ever. If you’re wondering about solutions to the crisis, this event is for you.
On Wednesday 25 November, Jose L Benitez-Williams will introduce you to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): an important technology for tackling emissions by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide entering our atmosphere.
This public lecture is for anyone who wants a better understanding of the world we live in. You don’t need to know anything about the topic. Just bring your curiosity.
This talk will introduce CCS and explore its journey from an emerging technology to a rapidly developing global industry.
You’ll learn how and why CCS is a vital part of the net-zero puzzle, alongside renewable energy and other technologies. You’ll discover how it works by capturing, transporting and storing carbon dioxide emissions deep underground – and how that storage process is made safe.
CCS tech is already operational in the UK and around the world. You’ll learn about major projects that show carbon storage moving from research to deployment at a commercial scale.
Thanks to the well-developed local maritime, engineering and industrial economy, Portsmouth and the Solent region are perfectly placed to benefit from the emerging low-carbon economy. Beyond the environmental benefits, you’ll also hear how a growing CCS industry could stimulate investment, create highly skilled jobs and generate opportunities in a range of industries.
