Come along to Department for a celebration of LGBT+ Arts, Heritage, People and Places!
On August 13, at 7pm in the cafe at Department, StoneCrabs Theatre will be showcasing the culmination of a number of local heritage projects.
Our Historic England-funded project, Celebrating LGBTQ+ Working Class Histories, has involved the community to highlight the hidden LGBTQ+ heritage of Ryde. With the app Listen Queer, we have produced an audio tour of Union Street, and a 50-page full-colour zine, UNION, full of articles about topics such as Isle of Wight Pride, the shops of Union Street, and 80s and 90s nightlife in Ryde, as well as people like Phaedra Kelly, Peter Woodnutt, and Oscar Wilde.
In a special collaboration with Figmentum, StoneCrabs Theatre is publishing the complete scripts of Stories Underfoot, bringing the magic and movement of its open-air promenade performances to readers everywhere. Alongside the scripts, this unique collection offers insights into the research behind the stories, reflections from the director and actors, and photographs by Maria Bell. We will be launching the book during the evening's celebrations.
As well, the evening will include an exclusive screening of Girls Who Saved the World, and Old Town Hall in Newtown, one of our immersive promenade performances, written by Anmarie Bowler.
The evening will be a relaxed and social occasion, involving readings of Union and Stories Underfoot, a short film, and the chance to connect with fellow creatives.
