Join us for a special film evening exploring the climbing history of Alpamayo, one of the most celebrated peaks in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca.
The Magnificent Mountain was filmed during the 1966 British expedition led by Dennis Gray, which completed the first ascent of Alpamayo’s north ridge to the mountain’s true summit. Originally broadcast by ITV under the title The Magnificent Mountain, the film offers a remarkable contemporary record of the expedition and its ascent.
The screening will be introduced by Alpine Club member Jim Gregson, who will place the film in its historical context. Jim will recount some of Alpamayo’s chequered climbing history, including the early attempts on the mountain and the eventual first ascent.
The film has a running time of approximately 55 minutes. The screening and introduction will be followed by an opportunity for audience questions and discussion.
