The Burton Street Foundation in Sheffield will host a six-day workshop on beginner pattern cutting for women's wear from 13 November 2026. The workshop will cover measuring techniques, drafting, toiling and fitting techniques. The ticket price is £620.00.
Six days of practical content and hands-on delivery that covers measuring techniques, drafting, toiling and fitting techniques.
Pattern drafting is the art of using maths and ratios to convert three dimensional measurements into a two dimensional diagram (a draft) that can be used to create patterns for cloth cutting.
This is a beginner drafting course. Not a beginner sewing course. Delegates must have a basic to fair knowledge in clothes assembly, so that you can assemble the patterns that you generate. Everything made on the course will be in calico toile format, so dont worry if your practical sewing skills are still a work-in-progress.
This course is ideal for learners who:
* Already have a sewing background.
* Have perhaps used shop bought patterns to make garments.
* Are industry professionals as part of work based training.
* Are keen home sewing enthusiasts.
* Are degree or masters students of fashion/costume.
This is a six day course and is split into day-pairs. Two-days teaching followed by a further two-days teaching. Then a break for independent sewing/learning time...before the last two days of teaching.
The advantage of this 'gapped' delivery is that it takes away time pressure when learning. You will be doing lots of work in the sessions but will also be given independent homework tasks. The date 'gaps' allow time to stop, rest, reflect, repeat, correct, explore the independent work. Especially helpful if you work full time or have a busy home life.
The course will be held at the Burton Street Foundation, home to scenes from the film 'The Full Monty'. A lovely site featuring historical period buildings and situated in the thriving suburb of Hillsborough, Sheffield.
It is a 15min tram-ride from the city centre and virtually door-to-door from the train station, via the tram. There is lots of free parking at the site and also on-street parking free of charge. The venue has accommodation within 5 min walking distance at the historical Garrison Hotel, for anybody wanting to make a weekend of it and book an overnight stay.
Please book via Day1 ticketing Friday 13th November 2026. This will enable you to purchase the full 6day course.
The course will run 10am-4pm on 3x Friday and Saturday, (Nov 13th/14th, Nov 20th/21st and Dec 4th/5th) with a social lunch option at a local café or restaurant in the suburb. There are dozens of independent cafés, bistros and bakeries within a 2 minute walk of the venue, as well as a large park 10 minutes away. And on one of the lunch breaks you will be escorted and left at a fabric and haberdashery shop that's just 3 minutes away...for anybody wanting to add to their fabric treasure trove.
