About this course
Join artist and printmaker Angela Hall for a practical introduction into a direct, painterly approach to screen printing. The session is designed to demonstrate how expressive prints can be created using accessible materials and simple analogue processes, without the need for complicated stencil-making methods.
You will create unique silkscreen monoprints using water-based materials, drawing and painting directly on the screen to create smooth, luminous colour effects through overprinting and transparent layers.
Angela will also share practical information about basic equipment, low-tech set-ups and personal printing tips that participants can use to continue experimenting beyond the workshop.
The workshop will cover:
• Screen set up and printing methods - equipment and materials
• Painting and drawing directly onto the screen using water-based materials including acrylic, watercolour, watercolour crayons, graphite and gouache.
• Using paper stencils, rubbings and drawn marks to build up layered images.
• Combining painterly marks with simple stencil methods to create expressive monoprints.
• Exploring how these techniques can be incorporated into photo-silkscreen processes as layered backgrounds or textural elements.
The workshop is suited to those new to printmaking or experienced artists who want to explore silkscreen printing in a more immediate and experimental way.
What will I need to bring?
All materials and equipment will be provided.
You are encouraged to bring inspirational materials such as sketchbooks, scrapbooks, collages, photographs or collections of visual ideas. Digital reference material is also suitable, and keeping ideas simple and flexible is reccommended.
